This weekends mission is to replace the xeVision xePulse wig-wag controller. Nothing was wrong with this, but it's no longer necessary since I switched to LED lights. The beauty of this unit is it warmed up the HID bulbs before it pulsed them -- HID's cannot be pulsed immediately. Since I no longer had the need for this functionality, I thought I could switch to a new device, and sell this one to recoup some bucks.

The new unit was the SSF-1 flashed sole by B&C Specialty Electronics (http://www.bandc.biz). In order to have it setup in a way the landing lights could be configured to both wig-wag and be on steadily, I needed a pair of diodes. The solution for this was a bridge-rectifier which was purchased at Radio Shack. I believe it was rated for 50A and 200V.

I also needed a pair of 10 watt 50 ohm resistors to "load" the flasher. The flasher is designed for incandescent lights, which always provide some constant level of resistance. LED's are different since there is a silicon controller. The resistors simulate a small light attached to the flasher, causing it to operate. I made this new flasher out of an plate with the identical size of the xePulse controller to make mounting it easy. Most of the existing wires and mounting holes could be used.

And the finished product. It looks complicated, but it's rather simple.

AeroElectric has a nice schematic of how it all fits together.

I added some additional methods to secure the wire wound resistors to the mounting bracket with some thin safety wire. This new flasher unit works great! The LED's flash perfectly. It's nice to have a higher level of in-air recognition with this upgraded landing lights and wig-wag functionality.
