I was reading a thread on Vans Air Force about Brian Chesteens installation of a new constant speed propeller. One thing I noticed was he used some nylon tubing around his safety wire on the prop bolts where the safety wire passes over the prop hub. I quickly learned from the replies that the nylon tubing was to prevent the possibility of the safety wire wearing through the hub, rendering the hub useless. In order to save $8,500 on a new prop, the safe thing to do was to replace the safety wire and include the nylon tubing. It was a real bear to remove the spinner and its attachment plate. So many screws and hard to reach nuts and bolts. Here is where the wear could possibly take place. Luckily for me, everything looks good now. Here is the tubing I purchased from Aircraft Spruce - Nylaflow 1/8" Outer Diameter, 0.096" inner diameter - ACS part number 05-00105. At $0.15/foot, it's cheap insurance. And yes, I splurged and bought 6' for a whole 90 cents. After a lot of swearing the frustration, the prop bolts safety wire was reinstalled. While I just felt like going home and getting a cold one after the safety wire was installed, I forced myself to reinstall the spinner. She's ready for flight again!
