I purchased a new GPS puck. This time around I went with a brand name - Garmin 18x-LVC. The price was around $60. The LVC unit doesn't have a connector on the cable - it is just raw wires, designed to be wired into a system. Just like the previous unit it requires a regulated 5V input.

The GRT units constantly exceed my expectations -- even after 5 years since I purchased them - at the top of the screen there was an indication of the GPS type and firmware level. I imagine this is just a datafield in the Garmin GPS data stream. I was also amazed at the number of satellites picked up by this receiver - 10! If memory serves me correctly, there are 24 total satellites, and only 12 of them are available at any given time.

The new GPS puck didn't seem to interfere at all with the Garmin 430W. I don't think I've ever seen this strong of reception on the unit.

No matter where I located the new GPS antenna it did not interfere with the Garmin 430W. For now I am going to keep it mounted in the same general area as the previous GPS puck.

After many hours of rewiring, the new antenna is installed. The biggest hassle in this project was re-tying all of the wax lacing cords under the panel. It just required a bunch of time in awkward positions. However, I am thrilled with the end result. The airplane is back together and ready for its next adventure!
