I bought a little (1 1/4" square) GPS puck off of Ebay for my second GPS for about $20. For the price, it seemed like a slam dunk for a backup. However, it had a limitation on the input voltage of 5 to 9 V DC. Since the airplane was 12-14 volts, I needed a 5V converter. What I ended up using was an old cell phone charger from my car. This puppy had a 7 Volt DC-DC converter in it, which is perfect for driving my GPS. I removed the case and soldered on some 22 AWG wire for the power input and output. Should work excellent.
