After my last flight I noticed my starter didn't quite turn my engine over as quick as it used to. It was plenty strong, but it got me thinking when the last time I changed the battery was - March 2020. Yup, time for a new one. The PC680 has a new model number - ODS-AGM16L. BatteryMart.com had the best price after coupon code of $172.77 shipped. In my last post I noticed there was an update for the GRT Safe-Fly is a 2020 GPS module to version 4. So I loaded the update binary onto a USB drive and uploaded it to the device. Always something to do on the RV! I wanted to apply some sort of heat shielding to the inside of the cowling to prevent paint peal. I found this on Amazon, and it passed the "Basement MAP Heat Gun Test". Yup, that is MAP. And that distance is what I was testing with - way hotter than exhaust will ever get. The sample on the right caused the foil to separate from the adhesive with direct flame contact. On the left the flame is not in contact with the material and there was no adverse issues. After looking through a few dozen options on Amazon this is the product I chose - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R6F97C9. It had great reviews for similar applications in automotive. I will put it through my own tests as I know better than to just trust reviews. I originally put a minimal installation on the inside of the cowling to test how effective this was. My only fear is it would peal up, come in contact with the exhaust and potentially be a fire hazard. After a 2 hour flight, it seems to hold up well. You can see some discolored areas to the left and right of the shielding where the exhaust heat already started to discolor the painted cowl. Also I noticed some rubbing happening here. I rotated my exhaust bracket to prevent any further rubbing. This shielding seems to work very well. I applied additional shielding to where the discolored area were. A $13 for a 1'x2' section, it's priced attractively and has so far great performance.
